Irden follwed Malik, keeping close to him, but refused to speak while they walked.

---

The general looked up questioningly, thinking something is happening, but when he saw that Liron is in no hurry, he relaxed slightly.

---

Selagon joined Tialko, and with Letian they soon got enough of food and water into the kitchen, and renewed the barricades beforee the front entrance, leaving only the stable door free.

Malik didn't press him with any single word, but here and there, he was casting looks at him, as if thinking about something.

--
Liron first looked at general, in his kind soft manner for a moment or two, as with his look he was assuring him everything is fine. Afterwards, he closed the door behind him as well as it could be done. With gentle casualness, he then stepped toward Svarik, and looked at him.. And then, he started gently wrapping him in the blanket he brought, obviously carefully not to wake him up...

Irden avoided his look, but paid attention to where they were going.

---

Svarik sighed slightly, but didn't wake, as if his body decided to grab the first occassion for rest and hold it firmly while it can to prevent collapsing later...

Malik was leading his thought lot streets, in pattern only he seemed to know. They were not going neither to richer, neither to poor quarters; it seemed place they headed to was someone in between, neither too catchy, neither negligent.. From time to time, Malik was looking around, as if perceiving looks of people that were not visible, in crowd or not, and choosing ways to avoid them, meandering through streets with carefulness and caution of an old experienced cat...

--

Liron's heart ached when he understood it... He did not worry much for Svarik's condition, but it was hitting him thought about how much Svarik endured in last month, and specially last few days... He was looking at sleepy Svarik with same expression bull priest would might look at the Bull; with deep admiration, and love mixed with something that should most likely be compared to worship which priests of all religions feel when they are in most sacred temples of their faith... And when he finished wrapping him, he knelt down at his bed, and in same manner, as if he is touching something sacred, thrilled and hypnotized by this little piece of time which he could steal without getting caught, with gulp and frozen enchanted expression, he reached with his hand toward his friend's hair, and lightly like a meadow breeze touched the shine on the grass, he brushed it, as if he endured whole day and will endure thousand days if needed, only for the sake of that one small pleasure...

It was a part of the city Irden didn't know much, and so he kept closer to Malik.

--
Svarik smiled slightly in sleep, sensing Liron's presence.

Aware that Liron is not noticing him in the moment, the general watched him from under half-closed eyelids for a moment, but then he shrugged and awerted his eyes.

They were going for quite a some time, and Malik was frowning from time to time, but not at boy, but as something in distances maybe. He was meandering all the time til one second, when he smiled slightly in smug satisfaction, and finally took straight direction, and for the first time, as quietly and self-collected as always, addressed the boy:
" They are not following us any more... It's good.. We'll be there in ten minutes at most. "

--
As Svarik smiled, smile spread on Liron's face too, smile elated and gentle... But a few heartbeats later, as if forcing himself to return to the real world, and, as he slowly, and maybe little unhappily got up from Svarik, he blushed to top of his ears, as if he was ashamed a little for stealing this small moment in time only for himself, but slight smile that was still on corner of his lips shown he was actually overjoyed over it as well, as if this one short moment he was fortunate enough to receive something very, very special and valuable... And precious beyond every measure.

"Who has been following us?" Irden looked around suspiciously, as if he expected to see the followers.

---

The general tried to stop thinking about it... but he couldn't. It was so strange, so out of place here, but it was exactly the contrast of this scene to the thought that brought it fort. *I enjoyed it...* he thought, and the thought was so persistent that it wouldn't go away. *I enjoyed it when he screamed in pain... And I would still...*

" My.. Companions... But when they concluded I will not led you anywhere until I get rid of them from my tail, they backed of with all due respect they need to have to a warrior on mission... You are an interesting child, my dear little fellow. It is natural if they feel curiosity... Lot, lot of us served under your father some-when in the past, in the time of the last emperor or later... " Malik replied quietly looking down in front of him; he seemed to not want to look boy at the moment, but his voice obviously shown condolences. " You are not just anybody... You are Irnet's son. "

---

General's thought was obviously very loud or very noticeable on his face, because on elf's face, as he looked at him, suddenly appeared deeply sad look, deep simple sadness and pain, as if he had been cut alive, and his hands, holding a cloak, twisted over it strongly, as if he was holding for it to collect himself... They trembled, just for one second, before he looked at general straightly in the eyes, but that look had no accusation and no scold...
*I know you did... * quietly echoed elven prince's thought in general's mind, on his beautiful, jet so grotesque gentle kind way... It was so out of place to say it, and to say it that way, just like general's thought was so out of place: * But it does not matter... *

Irden looked away, a sudden feeling of loss nearly overwhelming him. He gulped, and after a moment, collected himself. "You... served under him as well?" he asked a little shakily.

---

The general met his sight, somehow expecting him to hear the thought so he didn't looked surprised. "Does it not?" he whispered.

Man didn't seem to perceive much of the shaking in boy's voice, but he did perceive the question... Not looking at a boy, he nodded, and answered, equally quietly, not stopping walking: " I did.. For seven years.. Before my ten year daughter had drown, and my wife hearing that news took her own life... Then I left service.. Your father tried to convince me to stay, tried go comfort, saying he understands, and will give me time if that's what I need... But I refused... I was a good strategist, and was about to get promoted into higher rank, but it simply meant nothing any more to me. He was a great man... General speaking with his subordinate as equal.. " there was a respectful tone in his voice, respectful tone that was obviously hiding every trace of his own grieve: " A great man indeed... It was an honor to know him. You should be more, more than proud to call yourself his son... There is so much of him in you... I sow it from the first moment... "
---

Liron shook his head slightly, and whispered back: " When Conrad had sent the poisoned bat... When he offered me a choice... The moment I said *no*.. The moment I decided to keep you alive, no matter what he had said... " elf was still looking at general, with no trace of doubt in his beautiful emerald eyes: " I forgave you pain you caused him and I had undone... And now I forgive you for that thoughts, as long as they stay thoughts and don't turn into acts... I do not ask you to love him like I do.. I do not ask from you even to respect him... I only ask you to be honest to me... What you did, does not matter... How you *act* now, is what matters. If what you feel and think is not something you think I would enjoy to hear, say it, it will not change a thing. As long as you do not do what you think about... It will not change your life into death. " he averted not his gaze and continue with his strangely peaceful gentle and soft note, somehow: " That.. Is the truth, and truth only. "

Irden reached subconsciously for the figure of the general at his belt, as if seeking comfort in it. He left the other soldiers in the inn as they letf in a hurry, but the general he always carried with him. "I want to be a general as well when I grow up," he admitted quietly.

---

"I can control my actions... but I can't change who I am," the general looked at Liron, and for a moment, as if raising a veil, he let the elf see the cruelty in his look, as if he wanted Liron to understand that.

Malik didn't turn back while walking, but boy could swear he smiled slightly, despite it, and his quiet words echoed surprisingly encouraging: "It's good to strive for worthy dreams... But do not desire to be a general much, child... There is only one thing, before all others, you should dream of becoming when grow up... Whatever path of life you take, one thing you need to strive for above all other - the one your father achieved.. And that is to be and stay a good man, despite circumstances you are finding yourself in. Everything other, as becoming general, will come along with it, if you try diligently enough and stay persistent... "

---

But there was no change on Liron's expression... It remained equally calmly, and nothing in the atmosphere in the room shown the change... And slowly, very slowly, smile spread on elven prince's face, as if on some memory... * If I was given a goldfinch every time I heard that... * he thought for himself... He was content so far with general's honesty... Other will come in time...
And he said something other instead, with same kind note:
" Do I look like I will force you into it over your will? Yes, I know that face you shown... It's same face my father gives me every time I do something he does not like. It's same face on which I can always spread my own face in a smile... Because it can not affect me... If it was me on Svarik's place when you hurt him... " elf looked at him equally peacefully, but there was something a bit strange in his tone, that was telling with no doubt; what he was telling, he was telling from experience...:" There would be no pain, no suffering you could cause to my body that would make me scream even one single time when I have at least little bit of consciousness left... Not because I would not feel pain... Simply because I would not let it touch me, like I am not letting that look cause any fear in my heart. And even if I would be dying, I would still not be afraid of that look... If that look is how you see yourself and are okay with it, I will not be the one that will force you into changing it... "

( OOC: Officially, there are very few people that know that Liron's father was questioning him, and that know about his scars... No matter how many times he was hurt, Liron kept quiet over it and managed to hide it from his people with his friend's help, even if he didn't have to do it... Very few know about that, and general is not likely to...)

Irden looked at Malik a little uncertainly about what he means by that, but then he smiled. "Yes, I want to be like my father, even if I'm not a general!"

---

The general looked somehow taken aback by that, but somehow relieved that the elf is not going to force him to change. "Your father must find you annoying..." he couldn't help himslef but mutter.

" Now, that's the spirit! " Malik nodded approvingly, in just a bit louder voice that usual, and turned just a little bit, but enough for Irden to see the smile, maybe somehow wistful smile...
And then man stopped.... Before one middle sized house.. With nothing that house shown it is special, different than any other of the houses in the line, but Malik seemed to find what he was looking for. And surprisingly, now he looked like he's gathering courage to enter... Or to fight back the nervousness.
---

Now for the first time, elf seemed saddened, but not because of general, obviously it was when he had spoken, but because of what he pointed out: " I do not know.... " he replied with honesty in his tone: " I think it is more he disgusts and is somehow angered by the idea that he can not brake me, control me or change who I am with any forceful act... What annoys him the most is that when he expects me to scream, I do not... I would never hand him that pleasure... " he looked general in the eyes, and his look, suddenly for the first time seemed as old as he actually is, not as young as the smiled look of a a child he was all the time: " It is not the pain that thrills him the most... He enjoys weakness of the victim he questions. Not as much pain, but helplessness, and feeling he has absolute control over you.. He enjoys in that control. In knowing he can do anythnig he wants with you. Feeling he hurts you just because he can, knowing he will go unpunished because he's a king... But he can not achieve nothing with me, and has no control over my will. He did not had it in any, any occasion til now if I didn't let it. That's what annoys him the most, I think. That's why he sees only the prince, not the son, in me. "

Irden noticed that, and was confused a little. "Is something wrong?" he asked.

---

"Knowing he will go unpunished because he's a king..." the general smirked slightly as that was what he wanted to achieve as well before his plans failed. "Your friend did scream, though... Oh, he tried to remain silent... but at the end he screamed. If you don't want me to think about that, then you'll have to keep me in another room..." He awerted his look. "The memory is too persistent..." he added quietly.
